Elderly people from all backgrounds can feel isolated. But in communities such as those from African and Caribbean countries, where there is a tradition of extended family, this can often be hidden or denied.
Being a member of an ethnic minority can deepen the feelings of isolation, there may be no one in a typical sheltered housing scheme that shares your cultural reference points, no-one to reminisce with about childhood in the Caribbean.
Lewisham Park Housing Association was set up to specifically address this unmet need. We believe we are the only organisation in London that provides a culturally focussed service to elderly people from specific ethnic backgrounds.
Residents of St Mauritius House usually have high or complex care needs and are of African-Caribbean origin. We make sure there is a good mix of people from each of the Caribbean islands to ensure cultural diversity. |
